The problem Bioomix is aspiring to solve

The population of the Earth is estimated to be 9,7 billion by 2050, which will lead to a drastic increase (35-56%) in the need of food on a global level. Our current food production system is a major driver of climate change, biodiversity loss, water pollution, air pollution, and the evolution of resistant infections and other human diseases. 34% of the greenhouse gas emissions come from the global food system – the vast majority from agricultural productions. The quantity of synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, and fertilizers that is being used, causes nutrient leaching, and leads to serious problems such as low level of oxygen dissolved in the water, severe algal growth, and fish death.

To ensure a regenerative legacy for future generations and the entirety of life on Earth, transformative shifts in food production are essential. We must pioneer innovative solutions that not only secure food sources but also protect ecosystems, conserve precious resources, enhance human well-being, and preserve the habitability of our planet.

Bioomix’s solution

Bioomix is a Danish biotech company who has developed a unique and efficient technology for discovering new, beneficial microorganisms for nature. They call it the “microbeTRAP”. It is a 3D printed array with a series of chambers where nutrient pills and porous capture pills are formulated to stimulate the attraction and growth of different microorganisms. The array is placed in the environment where microbes settle and grow on the capture pills.

When the array is retrieved, the locally sourced natural microorganisms from the capture pills are cultured in petri dishes and bioreactors and transformed into organic, non-GMO products of beneficial microbes, that can replace agrochemicals and help farmers achieve a higher and better yield.

Planetary’s investment reason and theory of change

Our investment decision is driven by a desire to eliminate pesticides, antibiotics, and synthetic fertilizers from agriculture. We see Bioomix as a catalyst for a broader transformation in the agricultural sector.

By promoting the use of all-natural, locally sourced microbial products, Bioomix can help organic farmers create a more lively soil and improve yield as well as help farmers move away from the dependency on synthetic pesticides, antibiotics, and fertilizers. It will be done with locally sourced microbes respecting the diversity in soil and soil life across countries and continents. This could drive a profound shift in farming practices, moving towards a more sustainable and ecologically responsible approach that could influence policy and standards in the sector.

The commercial side

To solve this massive global challenge and make an actual transformation of the agricultural sector, Bioomix is bringing together biologists and farmers, microbiologists and materials scientists, environmental activists, and food producers. The demand of Bioomix’ microbials products are increasing and they are constantly working on discovering new microbes that can benefit soils, yields, and create an all-natural ecosystem for food production.
